As the title depicts, Overcoming Anxiety and Depression by Lillyin Love provides readers with healthy ways to deal with anxiety and depression. I liked that the author stated that her book doesn’t (and shouldn’t) replace professional treatments but only serves as a reference to supplement and reduce the symptoms with quick and easy remedies. Love aptly described anxiety as a shape-shifting entity that could easily morph from worry to panic; I resonated with this description because I have experienced it firsthand. Anxiety, as she explains, can take different forms, such as panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorders, phobias, etc. Depression can also come in various forms, such as persistent low mood, changes in appetite and weight, loss of interest, suicidal thoughts, etc.

Some of the remedies Love recommends include lifestyle changes (such as exercises and a good diet), mindfulness, self-compassion and acceptance, visualization, and many others. My favorite takeaway and remedy from Overcoming Anxiety and Depression is the grounding technique, which requires you to focus on the present. Since anxiety usually stems from worrying about the past or the future, focusing your thoughts on only the present will help keep you grounded.

There were many things I liked about this book, especially the fact that the author addressed a topic that affects a lot of people. I also liked that she provided exercises after every chapter for readers to practice the recommended remedies while reading the book. I found this immensely useful, especially the breathing exercises. She even included 101 affirmations to help counter feelings of anxiety and depression. Love used illustrations to buttress her points; for example, she included some yoga postures and poses, which were quite helpful.

There wasn’t anything I disliked about Overcoming Anxiety and Depression by Lillyin Love. It was also excellently edited. I gladly award it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

Overcoming Anxiety and Depression by Lillyin Love should be read by individuals as I see anxiety and depression as emotional feelings that can make one do the wrong things at the wrong time.
