Review of The In-Between
‘The world is a mirror of who we are—what we perceive is what we project.’ That’s just one of the most eye-opening quotes from The In-Between by Christian Espinosa. Through The In-Between, Espinosa reflects on his experiences of always living in a macro-moment bubble, always focused on the next big achievement instead of appreciating the micro-moments in between. After a car accident incident in Illinois, Espinosa had a reassessment of his priorities and developed a desire to appreciate life’s smaller, more meaningful moments. Through this book, Espinosa encourages us to pause, reflect, and actively savor the micro-moments that shape our existence.
I appreciated Espinosa’s vivid illustrations depicting his traveling adventures. I was particularly fond of his hiking trip to Kona, Hawaii, which consisted of several days of river rafting, camping, nighttime zoo excursions, zip-lining, scuba diving, and kayaking. Espinosa shares how his life experiences molded and evolved his outlook. Some experiences include his upbringing at the hands of his mother and stepfather, who abused drugs but was also a victim of bullying; going through a divorce; getting diagnosed with blood clots; and having disputes with his CEO.
I enjoyed how Espinosa skillfully characterized his writing with deep introspection, delving into the depths of his thoughts and emotions. Espinosa skillfully captures the essence of everyday experiences, infusing them with meaning. Whether it’s interacting with a stranger on a triathlon or setting boundaries with friends, he reminds us that life unfolds in these small, delicate moments. I admire how Espinosa takes responsibility for his actions; he addresses micro-aggressions with diligence and sensitivity in his interactions, both in his dating life and at work.
A standout moment is when Espinosa emphasizes the importance of crafting informed intentions as they culminate in creating unforgettable memories. An example is during a hiking trip when Espinosa slowed down to take in the scenery. This moment highlights the significance of being present and appreciating the surrounding beauty rather than rushing through life, reminding us to prioritize mindfulness and intentionality in our actions to truly savor life’s experiences.
With its meticulous editing and insightful content, the book is a must-read for individuals looking for practical self-improvement strategies and a positive outlook on life. Espinosa offers valuable prompts that encourage readers to reflect on their own experiences and introspective stories that evoke deep self-discovery.
I give it a 5-star rating for its authentic, emotional, and resonant storytelling that deeply resonated with me, particularly because of its profound insights on mindfulness and personal growth. Espinosa openly shares his life experiences, building empathy and connection with the reader. Espinosa acknowledges his shortcomings, emphasizing his humanity and vulnerability to negative experiences, which he has used as stepping stones to grow into the person he is today.
In conclusion, Espinosa’s acknowledgment of being a work in progress not only highlights the importance of continuous personal development and self-awareness but also adds depth to his admirable qualities. Espinosa encourages us to appreciate life’s fleeting moments, emphasizing the significance of mindfulness and reflection. This book emphasizes the transformative power of mindfulness and reflection, urging readers to be present in the moment and engage in thoughtful introspection.
