Review of The In-Between
The In-Between by Christian Espinosa opens with a gripping account of the author and his partner, Vanessa, witnessing a road accident unfold before their eyes, including a tire blowout and vehicle collision. Prior to the accident, the author's mind was preoccupied with other matters, but this incident prompts him to reconsider what truly deserves his attention—the time between the past and the future, known as "the in-between." The book advocates for navigating life's challenges by embracing these "in-between" moments, which are the small, often overlooked interactions and decisions that shape our experiences. It emphasizes finding a balance between long-term goals (the macro) and immediate actions (the micro). The author shares personal anecdotes of instances where he neglected to live in the "in-between," focusing instead on the macro, and discusses how this habit impacted his relationships.
Through these narratives, the author highlights the importance of prioritizing what truly matters and the consequences of focusing on distractions that divert attention from the present moment. He reflects on relationships from his past, including those with his mother, stepfather, and grandfather, and explores how they influenced him. Core values and their significance are also examined, with the author providing anecdotes and examples to illustrate their importance.
In the final chapter, the author offers practical guidance in form of tips, including advice for authenticity and leadership, among others. These actionable insights aim to help readers navigate life's challenges and embrace the in-between moments.
What I appreciated about the book was its authenticity, particularly the author's candid portrayal of struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic, something many readers can undoubtedly relate to. I appreciated how the author demonstrated that other people in his life have applied the concept of "the in-between" as well, and it worked for them. Additionally, the detailed narration of the author's adventures, like mountaineering, not only made for engaging reading but also served to illustrate and reinforce the book's central theme effectively.
There wasn't anything I disliked about the book. It was eye-opening, organized, and engaging from start to finish. The book was also well edited with no errors, which enhanced the reading experience. So, I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. However, readers should be aware that the book features frequent time shifts in perspective, so it's important to pay close attention while reading.
