Review of Simple Ways to Reduce Back Pain
Simple Ways to Reduce Back Pain Today was created by Sandra Janocha, a dedicated physical therapist who has worked in diverse clinical settings for 33 years since graduating with a Master’s in Physical Therapy in 1988. Annoying or often debilitating back issues affect all ages, shapes, and sizes. Our “natural habits” can make back-related issues inevitable as we age. This clear and understandable book graciously shares simple techniques to lessen back pain now and prevent it in the future. The author cautions the reader to visit a physical therapist if suffering back pain for longer than a couple of weeks, as the book is not meant to be a substitute for seeking needed medical treatment or therapies.
The book offers easy-to-implement strategies for preventing injuries and early intervention techniques to combat even the slightest twinge of back pain. And they are simple adjustments. The author never advises the reader to “push through the pain.” On the contrary, she implores the opposite. Simple Ways to Reduce Back Pain Today gives invaluable insight into proper spinal alignment when standing, sitting, bending, lifting, or sleeping. I began using some of these techniques and noticed a significant difference in my lower back fatigue. I thought, for instance, that locking my knees when standing in one place for a long time relieved strain from my lower back, but I learned from this book that it does the opposite! So, I have been practicing standing without locking my knees and am already experiencing a positive difference. There are other excellent techniques in the book that I am applying and are also helping. This book is a beneficial tool to revisit again and again.
Written in easy-to-understand language, the book teaches crucial spinal health tips, the muscles that move and stabilize the spine, and which muscles to strengthen for optimal back health. The reader will learn which muscles to “activate” when sitting and standing—termed “neutral sitting/standing"—to reduce chronic inflammation, prevent future back problems, and much more.
I found nothing to dislike about this book. It appears to have been professionally edited and contains information that can improve the lives of people suffering from back-related issues or help prevent future problems. A weekly “checklist” chart for noting which strategies help the reader as they apply specific techniques and a review questionnaire with an answer key is included at the conclusion. I found these helpful in keeping me on track with progress and reinforcing everything I learned.
Suitable for all ages, Simple Techniques to Reduce Back Pain Today is an excellent book for anyone interested in health-related modalities for self-care. I recommend it to anyone suffering from back pain and to anyone wanting to prevent the development of future back problems. The conscientious support shared in this book and its impeccable editing merits 5 out of 5 stars.
