Review of Happiness to the 10th Power
Starting out reading "Happiness to the 10th Power" ("H10") I was kind of pessimistic if it could help me in any way, let alone make me happy. I meant that the author is some achieved, privileged, accomplished man. What would he know about the state of happiness from his askew perspective of this world? And then, bam! I felt an epiphany while reading the Freedom chapter. It was also while I was listening to random new music I found unintentionally, which will be added to my favorite musician list. Later, you'll know why music is a contributing factor to being happy. After you've finished reading H10.
So what is this H10 all about? What is the approach being used? It's about 10 important elements, and if you could fulfill them, then you'd be happy. The elements are meditation, honesty, friendship, hobbies, charity, personal goals, freedom, vocation, and the body. And the 10th enhances the effectiveness of the first nine.
Here are some helpful lessons from this book:
1. It takes more energy and work to lie than to tell the truth.
H10 is different from the other self-help books. In other books, they give you methods and tricks to solve the problem that you want to overcome. But in H10, there are a lot of descriptions of data and research before the advice. As I said, I was pessimistic with H10, then something happened: I encountered situations that were described in H10. Not only once, but many times. H10 changed how I think and behave, and it satisfies me.
I usually tell white lies just to be practical. But this time I feel like telling what it is plainly like what it is, although it would take longer to tell. It was going smoothly.
2. If you allow your new interest to take too much time out of your life, you won’t be able to spend enough time on other important aspects of being happy.
H10 truly favors balance with the other important aspects: the other 9 factors. I have a hobby that I usually do for hours, and although I was feeling happy then, afterwards I would always feel really tired. Now I only do it for an hour each day. One more thing I learned and applied. The author really knows what he said.
3. Everything has always worked out.
I like how the author concludes H10. It has a strong message and connection with the other 9 factors. It's so effective.
Pessimistic as I was, I've thought to give this book below 4 stars. Along the way, this book truly helped me, and it should help you too. There was truly nothing to dislike with H10. Anything less than a perfect 5 out of 5 stars is just not making any sense. Hands down. Thank you, Mr. Ward.
