It is normal for life to give us many tests and trials. We will pass some, and we will fail some, but it hits differently when our loved one is going through such trials. I, for one, would do anything to help them get through it. What began as a seemingly innocuous change in Louis's gait at the tender age of three soon escalated into a brutal battle for survival. First Survivor: The Impossible Childhood Cancer Breakthrough by Mark Unger is an inspiration for families and patients, especially the youngest among us, who find themselves going through life-threatening illnesses. Within its pages lies a wealth of guidance and a roadmap to help families traverse the terrain of medical crises with fortitude and empowerment.

Initially suspected to be Perthes disease, a series of tests unveiled the devastating truth: little Louis was afflicted with neuroblastoma, an exceptionally aggressive and life-threatening form of cancer. Faced with this harsh reality, Mark Unger embarked on meticulous documentation of his son's fight, his notes serving as a lifeline amidst the turbulent waters of uncertainty and anguish.

Going through such an emotional experience and ordeal is a feat that defies comprehension for those who have not walked a similar path. Yet, Mark and Mary Ellen Unger refused to succumb to despair, their resilience fortified by an unyielding determination to be active participants in their child's care.

What I loved most about the book were the notes they kept. The practice of maintaining a comprehensive list of questions, a strategy championed by the Ungers, is an invaluable tool that fosters open communication and informed decision-making. By embracing this approach, they ensured that every concern, every uncertainty, was given a voice, enabling all parties involved—parents, physicians, and caregivers alike—to collaborate harmoniously in pursuit of Louis's recovery. I also loved how perfect the editing of the book was.

There was absolutely nothing I disliked about this book, and I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend it for families facing similar adversities, as First Survivor: The Impossible Childhood Cancer Breakthrough by Mark Unger represents far more than a mere chronicle of one child's journey; it is a testament to the undefeatable human spirit, resilience, hope, and determination in the face of life's greatest challenges.
