Review of Living Intentionally
What is ‘intention’ according to you? Is it a mere thought, a wish, or something deeper? Is intention what provides you with purpose and direction? Or is it the motivating factor behind all your actions? Or perhaps it's something entirely different? For me, intention surpasses a passing whim; it represents a deliberate dedication to harmonize my thoughts, words, and deeds with my core values and aspirations. However, have you ever thought of living your entire life intentionally? If not, then Living Intentionally by Viterose Van Huis is a book you should consider picking up to learn what exactly it means to live intentionally.
If I had to describe ‘living intentionally’ in short, then I would say that it means knowing what you want and making a plan to get there. For instance, imagine your life is like a tree. Your intentions are the roots of the tree. They're not always visible, but they support everything else. Your goals and actions are like the branches, fruit, and blossoms of a tree. This is what the book taught me. So let’s talk about the book now!
To begin with, this is the author’s personal account in which she talks about the various phases of her life and how in each of these phases she managed to effortlessly, without even being aware early on, live a life with intentions. From the start, her story deeply touched my heart.
The author grew up in Barbados and faced several difficulties, such as poverty, shame, and discrimination. These struggles stemmed from her being born out of wedlock and raised by a single mother. She sought love and acceptance, which led to early teenage promiscuity. Sadly, she also experienced sexual abuse at the ages of eight and eleven, making that time especially difficult for her. However, at the age of seventeen, she decided to change her life by getting married and becoming a mother.
Viterose's determination to be a good wife and mother, despite her difficult circumstances, was truly inspiring. She moved to America, worked tirelessly, and saved money to bring her family over. Settling in New Hampshire, she continued to work hard, learning to drive and acquiring skills to support her family. I believe this just demonstrates the power of setting intentions and working diligently towards achieving them.
Further, the author shares her journey as a mother and the intentions she set for herself to be the best mother she could be. Despite the weight of motherhood in her youth, she was determined to provide her children with a better life than she had. She migrated to America with her children, even though it was a tradition for Caribbean parents to leave their children behind while they established themselves financially. For Viterose, having her children with her was more important. I truly admired this decision by the author.
Ahead, she delves into the concept of intentionally growing old and emphasizes the power of our thoughts and intentions in shaping our health and aging process. She also explores the concept of misguided intentions and their impact on our lives. In it, she tells us how societal norms and religious beliefs often lead to misguided intentions. They create more problems than they solve! Thus, she urges us to challenge these norms and embrace a more authentic and empowering way of living.
Personally, this book really touched me. The author's journey from a tough childhood in Barbados to becoming a strong, determined woman in America is incredibly inspiring. Her story of facing challenges, setting clear goals, and working hard to achieve them deeply moved me. What I liked most about the book was its practical advice and heartfelt storytelling. I also appreciated how honest she was about the difficulties she faced, like money problems and losing loved ones. I particularly enjoyed the poem "Live with intention" by Mary Anne Radmacher, which was shared at the beginning of the book. Additionally, I liked that the book included quotes from inspirational people like Eckhart Tolle, Raymond Francis, Bruce Lipton, and many others. Thus, considering all of these positive aspects, I unreservedly rate this inspiring book 5 out of 5 stars. I couldn't find anything to dislike about it. The editing was also very well done, as I only noticed a couple of errors.
In conclusion, Living Intentionally is a book worth reading. It will teach you to live a life of knowing who you are because, as Viterose says, ‘You don’t have a life; you are life.’ This book is a must-read for anyone looking to live life with intention, purpose, and meaning.

At its core, living intentionally requires a profound level of self-awareness. It prompts you to delve into introspection, understanding who you are, what you stand for, and what truly matters to you. This introspective journey lays the groundwork for setting meaningful priorities. Rather than being swept up in the whirlwind of daily demands and distractions, you intentionally allocate your time, energy, and resources to pursuits that resonate with your core values and contribute to your long-term vision of success and fulfillment.
Living intentionally isn’t just about setting lofty goals; it’s about the deliberate cultivation of habits and routines that support those objectives. It involves creating a roadmap for your life—a blueprint that guides your decisions and actions. Whether it’s dedicating time each day to personal growth, nurturing relationships, pursuing passions, or contributing to causes you believe in, every choice is made with a clear understanding of its significance in the larger tapestry of your life.
Yet, living intentionally is not synonymous with rigidly adhering to a predetermined plan. It’s about remaining adaptable and responsive to the ever-changing landscape of life. Flexibility and resilience are integral components of intentional living, allowing you to pivot when circumstances shift and to learn from setbacks and failures along the way.
Moreover, intentional living fosters a profound sense of gratitude and appreciation for the present moment. By grounding yourself in the here and now, you cultivate mindfulness—a state of heightened awareness that enables you to savor life’s simple pleasures, cherish meaningful connections, and find beauty in the ordinary.
