Official Review: Sex for the Third Age by Patricia Maris

Sex For the third age by Patricia Maris is a collection of several case studies regarding the sexual nature of human beings. The book is written to help people enjoy true intimacy in sexual relations. I was tempted to read this book because it said in its description that this is the most controversial book of the century.
The author, Patricia Maris is an expert on intimacy in sexual relationships. She deliberates over different situations which people come across in their lives through various case studies. She describes various case studies in graphic details and I must mention here that some of them are pretty kinky. There are cases where people want to have extra-marital affairs, get paid for their sexual activities or desire to have threesome sex. She gave the examples and the description in a very erotic manner.
The author explained the first, second and third age of life. I was also curious to understand her classification and this was one of the reasons I picked up the book. However, I will not disclose the classification here as it will be an injustice to the readers who want to read this book. There are many tips provided by the author to make the sexual relations lively and satisfying.
Her biggest tip was to let go of the inhibitions. Through many case studies, she conveyed that we should fully take part in sex and do whatever excites us and makes us happy and fulfilled. There are many other tips also which you will find in the book. However, the one thing on which I do not agree with the author is her stand on adultery. She claims that human beings are not genetically designed for monogamy. She claims that adultery makes the relationships exciting and having an extra-marital affair or sometimes cheating on your partner can bring back the spark in the relationship. Since, I am a firm believer in a monogamous relationship; I could not make peace with this claim. The author also puts forward her views on the use of pornography, which I find interesting. One more thing which I liked about the book is that in different sections, the author has given a QR code which leads to a blog explaining that particular section in more details.
There is one thing that particularly caught my attention in the book. It was the use of interesting and witty quotes in the beginning of each chapter. For example, in the beginning of one chapter the quote was “There are a number of mechanical devices which increase sexual arousal, particularly in women. Chief among these is the Mercedes-Benz 380SL convertible.” and another favourite of mine is “Sex is the best cure. One good night of sex and your problems are gone.”
Overall, I found Sex for the third age a nice read. It was not so enthralling, but it was also not boring. It is the kind of book which you can read in one sitting. Sex for the third age raises and answers many questions like, why and how the intimacy disappears from relationships? Why do people start putting their sexual desires at the bottom of their priority list? Why do couples who were once so close drift apart? Why frustration starts creeping in a long-standing relationship? Most importantly, the author tells in this book what could be done to avoid and dissipate such situations. She explains how by moving step by step we can make our lives sexually better and happier. I give this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. I reduced one star as I found two or three typing errors in the book and because I think that there are some points which were repeated unnecessarily in the book. One such point was intimacy. The author defined it so many times and in so many ways that it became irritating. I think she did a good job defining it at the first time itself. I also think that this book could have turned out better if more case studies and research had been incorporated in it. I will also warn the readers regarding the graphic description of sexual activities in the book. I think this book might not be suitable for young readers and recommend this only for adult readers.

Thank you Gregory. Your appreciation made my day.It is an interesting book. You can try it.Gregory Chileshe wrote:Well reviewed though it leaves many to like to read and review it. I like your spirit, and you seem to be God fearing, when you mentioned a few things that put you off though they were not part of why you rated it 3 to 4 stars. As i was going through your review i was thinking that the 'adultery' issue and other things in the content would be the reason to down grade but it seems it was an interesting book still but only irritating repetitions and a few errors you noted. Because of your review it gives me interest to maybe read and review it as well but i liked it where you warned people and the under age of not even to consider going for it because it may not be suitable for them. Great review,i appreciate.

Thank you Marylynn. Yes, you are right but I believe that since we are all sexual beings we should discuss such matters and this book does a good job for that. Please do read and share your views. I will look forward to it.Marylynn wrote:Seems like the kind of book i would read. Not so many people are comfortable talking about it.
