The book I Am~The Product of The Mentally Ill Monster~My Journal by Brandy Rex is a personal journal where she tells about her childhood and all the hurdles she faced while growing up to where she is now. She tries to relay her experience with her abusive father as much as she can remember and how it affected her personality and mental health along the way.

Everything in the book was perfectly narrated and followed a fast but natural pace and flow. The author wrote solely from her point of view, feelings, actions, and experience. I found the book very intense and eventful. There were lots of unexpected twists and central suspense (especially in the first few chapters).

The captivation of this book can only be matched by a few fantasy novels. Or maybe I found it so because everything felt so surreal despite being a true story. The author was so good at narrating her experience that some pictures stuck in my mind throughout the read, and several intrusive thoughts were triggered. In fact, while this is a good book where all who share in the same experience of childhood trauma can find solace, I would say that the book is powerful enough to trigger certain memories, on the other hand.

I also loved how the author didn’t paint anyone on the all-bright side, not even herself. She was able to understand the complexities of the humans around her while appreciating their strengths and sympathizing with their flaws. Despite the strong urge to judge, the author led me to understand that not everyone has a hand in shaping who they become or where they find themselves. There were several lessons and eye-openers in the story, even when the author wasn’t trying to insert one.

However, one problem I have with the book is its title. While it is a very blunt and great caption to depict the nature of her childhood, anyone who has finished the book would disagree with it. I bet that there are other title names that would sound less confrontational and negative so that some readers wouldn’t be put off. Nevertheless, this is just an opinion from a reader, as I cannot tell the author how to share her story. The title didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the story anyway.

Overall, I’d rate the book 5/5.

The book was a masterpiece from beginning to end. The author was very expressive and had a narrative style that smoothed the progression of the story while cutting out “long stories." This made the book concise and detailed, fitting in enough information to evoke emotions within the mind of the reader. There was nothing I didn’t like about the book. Everything was in place, from the structure to its immersion and simplicity.
