Walk Her Up the Stairs by Loretta Fox is a non-fiction book that takes us on a poignant journey of a daughter caring for her mother after a terminal hospice diagnosis. It delves into the intricate relationship between the two, with a focus on the final phase of the author's mother's life. Despite being a trained hospice volunteer, the author grapples with numerous conflicting situations, particularly due to the stark contrast in their religious beliefs. This emotional journey is sure to resonate with readers who have experienced similar caregiving roles.

The book also contains poems demonstrating what the author felt about those themes and quotes from her mother at the beginning of the chapters. This approach gives the reports a more intimate tone and makes the reader feel closer to what is being discussed. The author was very successful in incorporating these elements into the memoir.

My favorite part of the book is the poems before the chapters. This mixture of poetry and prose was very successful. It is as if, in the poems, the author could express her most intimate feelings more faithfully. She has a poem in which she tries to put herself in her mother's shoes, and you can see that the poem is different from the others in which she expresses her feelings. These poems served both to give a more intimate aspect and also to highlight the message exposed in the chapters.

A book in which a daughter takes care of her elderly mother could be monotonous in many parts. Let's not be hypocrites. However, this does not happen in this work. The fact that the mother and daughter are so different and the conflict between them is constant causes funny and conflicting situations to arise all the time. I don't know if the author thought about doing this on purpose, but I didn't find any chapter monotonous. It is well-edited, and I couldn't find even one grammatical error.

Overall, Walk Her Up the Stairs is awe-inspiring, remarkable and intriguing. The author puts her soul into this book, and it is possible to see even the traumas and problems that have not been overcome on the pages of this work. There was nothing I didn't like, and this book categorically demonstrates how a relationship between mother and daughter can occur even with the two having opposing views of the world on many issues. Therefore, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this work to anyone who has elderly mothers in declining health and wants to know how to deal with the situation. The book is a guide that can help parents and children to relate better at this stage of life.

I enjoyed reading the review. I think one of the major take-aways here is that despite all the difficulties that can exist in a mother-daughter relationship, despite all the differences and all the arguments, there is love and a strong bond between them. The daughter found the courage to stay and look after her mother, knowing that it will not be easy; I admire that!
