The narrative of this book centers on Louis Unger, who, at the tender age of three, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an uncommon and aggressive form of brain cancer. Doctors provide a grim prognosis, but Louis' parents, Mark and Mary Ellen, refuse to accept it. They start an unrelenting battle that will put their love, strength, and all of their beliefs to the test in order to save their son.

"First Survivor" does not sugarcoat the brutal realities of childhood cancer. You will witness Louis' valiant fight against cancer for seven years. As Mark and Mary Ellen struggle to navigate a complicated medical system in an effort to find their son the best treatments, you will share their anxiety and frustration. There is, however, a glimmer of hope that never really goes away amid the sadness and tears.

There was nothing about this book that I disliked. Louis, his parents, and his older brother share a strong bond of love. Readers witness how love spurs them on, making them Louis's champions. Louis's parents go from being devastated parents to ferocious supporters who look into available treatments with top physicians. Their story sheds light on the incredible progress being made in childhood cancer research, providing a beacon of hope to countless families fighting similar battles. What I loved most about this book—and something I hope other readers will appreciate too—is that the author has included a glossary that can be referred to when needed, so that anyone who reads this book would not have to worry about not understanding technical medical terms.

I rate this book four out of four stars. This book is recommended not only for cancer patients but for anyone who has ever faced a seemingly insurmountable obstacle. It is proof of the incredible power we all carry within and the steadfast hope that can light up even the darkest of nights. Thus, "First Survivor" is a great choice if you are searching for a story that will move you to tears, laughter, and ultimately inspiration. It serves as a potent reminder that everything is truly conquerable by love, hope, and the human spirit. Expert editing has ensured that this book contains no errors.
