This year seems to be a year of reading memoirs for me. I say so because Christian Espinosa's The In-Between is probably the 18th memoir I have read this year. And honestly, I am loving this memoir-reading journey of mine. So what is Espinosa’s memoir about?

Well, I’d say that his memoir is quite an introspective one in which Christian focuses on the micro-moments that shape our existence and the importance of living in the spaces between major life events. That is why the book is titled The In-Between!

The book opens with a pivotal rock-bottom moment in Denmark, where Espinosa, amidst the turmoil of the ‘COVID-19’ pandemic, confronts the stark reality of his life. He describes how his obsessive focus on achieving outcomes, such as expanding his cybersecurity business, writing a book, and competing in "Ironman triathlons," led to an internal crisis and a significant relationship breakdown. This moment of clarity sets the stage for the rest of the book, as Espinosa learns to value the in-between moments and the small joys they bring.

Espinosa's transformation is further illuminated by a life-changing accident on an Illinois road, which serves as a metaphor for his shift in perspective. He describes how this incident sparked a commitment to living more intentionally, balancing his pursuit of big goals with an appreciation for everyday experiences. This balance, he argues, is crucial for personal growth and happiness.

The thing I liked most about this memoir is how every character in the author’s life contributed in some way or another. For instance, Vanessa, Espinosa’s partner, shows nurturing and calmness, especially during a car accident, which helps him learn to be present. Trisha, his former partner and coach, like a mirror, reflects his strengths and flaws, teaching him to balance ambition and personal well-being. His friend Bill shares parenting insights, emphasizing meaningful conversations and presence. Moreover, even the injured woman from the accident reminds him of life's fragility and the importance of human connection. Thus, as you can see, each character taught the author something profound.

I would give this memoir 5 out of 5 stars. The main reason is that I loved how the author was open about his struggles and shared his story with such raw honesty. These factors make the book relatable and inspiring. He does not shy away from discussing his flaws and the painful lessons he has learned. Instead, he uses these experiences to illustrate the transformative power of living in the in-between. Thus, it deserves this rating, as there is nothing I did not like. The editing of the book is exceptional as well; not a single error was to be found throughout!

In conclusion, The In-Between is a great read for anyone looking to find balance and meaning in their lives. Christian Espinosa’s journey from focusing on big goals to appreciating small moments will surely inspire you.
