The Unger Family received troubling news in 2001 on a day when there should be gratitude, feasting, and joy. Knowing that one of your family members has a terminal illness, one that is difficult to cure, isn't anything close to tragic; in fact, it's even worse. That knowledge couldn't be described in words, especially for Mark Unger in "First Survivor," along with his wife, Ellen, receiving troubling news about their son, Louis Unger.

In great detail, the book explains all the events in the family's journey, making a tremendous inspirational memoir. There is a display of great courage and determination to seek answers and find the cure for young Louis. I enjoyed reading this book, seeing that the author's determination helped save his son and learning more about cancer.

There weren't any things I disliked about the book. I loved the technique in which Mark Unger decided to describe his and his family's journey. He didn't keep the narrative from his perspective; he included others, and I could learn about everyone's feelings and thoughts during this complex process. He also gave definitions of certain words, keeping the reader clear.

And so, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because this was an inspiring and heartfelt story. I was able to connect to little Louis and become full of joy when reading the ending. There were no grammatical errors that distracted me, and the author explained everything with precision and clarity. The author effectively wrote, in which I could feel what he was going through and witness the family's determination and bravery in not giving up or settling for less.

I recommend this book to those who enjoy reading memoirs and heartbreaking stories. This story truly gives out hope and impacts others struggling with similar issues. The author found courage in those hard times and bravery in revisiting those awful memories to share them with the world. Indeed, it is an inspirational book!
