How would you handle the sudden revelation that the person you loved was not the person you thought? If they suddenly seemed to become a completely different person altogether. What would you do if you suspected your spouse of having an affair? How would you handle the threat of your family being torn apart? These are the questions Vernon Baumrind was forced to ask himself.

For some, the sanctity of marriage can be difficult to maintain, especially when facing the many hardships that come with it; some are more difficult than others. Dealing with the betrayal of someone so close to him, the world Vernon knew was suddenly turned upside down. Facing the possibility of losing not only his wife but the life they had built together, he quickly realized a new fear. In a time when women were traditionally granted custody, Vernon feared losing the only family he had left, his two children, a consequence he was not willing to accept. Thus, Vernon had to endure emotional anguish for several tumultuous weeks and resort to tactics that some might deem unlawful.

In Deceit , Vernon tells of the events that took place during his wife’s affair and the lengths he went to to ensure he was granted custody of their two children. Using strong hard evidence he collected himself, including transcripts from intimate phone calls and the testimony of private detectives, Vernon prepared for a fight he never imagined having to endure. Now he outlines all the events of that taxing time in his life, in hopes of bringing to light the dangers lurking just under the surface that often go overlooked and unsuspected.

Wow! The author had me enthralled from beginning to end. Vernon lays it all out there. A true testament to the possible pitfalls of marriage and the hazardous predators prowling, ready to pounce, prey, and wreak havoc on another's home life. A nonfiction tale of espionage and meticulous planning, it was a quick read in that it was nearly impossible to put down. I believe the book could benefit from including other points of view, but I found no other faults. Based on the complete lack of typographical errors and how the book gripped me from beginning to end, I feel I must give the book a rating of 5 out of 5.
