Mysteries of the First Instant: Illuminating What Science Hasn’t Answered about the Inception of Our Universe by Daniel Friedmann was written to unify the Biblical account of creation in Genesis with the scientific data, as told to the author’s son by analogies such as Lego. It is exciting and provides enough evidence from logic, science and history to allow the reader to make their own judgement.

Given the heated topic of science and religion, this is a much-needed book. It serves as a reminder that we can only know so much, given that the scientific method does not deal with something out of nothing and therefore can only go so far back. Religion is left to human judgement about the existence or non-existence of a creator.

I enjoyed the author’s journey through the Rabbinic tradition to find predictions about the age of the universe that later came true. The difference between the Hebrew meaning of the word used for God and the English is important to reveal to clear up what the author means when he is talking about God.

This book is best suited for an audience interested in the subject of science and religion. A person who is not religious may still find some interest in the book although it might be challenging to them. I would argue the book would be difficult for a younger audience or an audience unfamiliar with the topic or the usual arguments about the origin of the universe as at times it is quite technical.

The book is exceptionally well-edited, and I did not notice any errors. It provided solid evidence for the authors claims that would make most people interested in the subject think, whatever tradition they come from. I am therefore pleased to award this book 5 out of 5 stars. I look forward to reading more from the author.
