Review of Behind The Pole
Behind The Pole: The Truth About Exotic Dancing by Torrin Richelle gives readers an insight into the exotic dancing industry. Richelle narrates her experiences, from her first encounter with a gentlemen's club to her finally leaving the industry behind.
Through Richelle's storytelling, readers learn about the inner workings of the exotic dancing industry, from the audition process to the rules and regulations dancers must follow. Richelle describes how her personal and professional life fluctuated as she navigated through various clubs in her life.
I liked how each chapter delves into Richelle's interactions with club owners, managers, fellow dancers, and customers, providing a multifaceted perspective on how clubs functioned. From the sense of community among dancers to the exploitation by club owners, Richelle provides the reasons why exotic dancers remain in the industry despite many physical and emotional obstacles.
Despite the harsh realities of exotic dancing for many years, Richelle is resilient. She navigates through personal challenges and professional setbacks with determination, finding her way out of the industry and onto a new path.
The book contains detailed descriptions of the exotic dancing industry. The book’s descriptions of physical and psychological exploitation and drug use may not appeal to all readers. However, readers who enjoy memoirs of unconventional professions and navigating through social stigmas and life hardships will enjoy this book.
Overall, Behind The Pole: The Truth About Exotic Dancing is an eye-opening read that shows the often misunderstood profession of exotic dancing. The book contains minimal grammatical errors and is well-edited. The book is well-written and easy to read, and each chapter is engaging. I learned a lot about the exotic dancing industry and have gained more understanding and empathy for the complex lives of exotic dancers. I also liked how Richelle reflected on her experiences with honesty and introspection. I have no criticism. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.
