First Survivor: The Impossible Childhood Cancer Breakthrough is a story about the author's son Louis' incredible battle with neuroblastoma, a journey filled with gruelling treatments, setbacks, and ultimately, a glimmer of hope. This book was written by Mark Unger. Mark and his wife, Mary Ellen, became fierce advocates for their son. They navigate the complex world of cancer treatment, consulting renowned specialists and exploring every possible avenue to save Louis. Their story takes you from traditional medical centres to uncharted territories, showcasing the lengths a parent will go to for their child's life.

There are so many positive aspects to this book. The book offers a unique perspective on Louis' fight by using chapter titles that reflect the number of days he's battled the illness. This approach adds a personal touch, allowing readers to connect with the passage of time and the emotional rollercoaster the family endures. The book goes into details about immunotherapy, a cutting-edge approach to cancer treatment that utilises the body's own immune system to fight the disease. This scientific exploration sheds light on the immense potential of this innovative therapy and its role in Louis' recovery. The inclusion of photographs throughout the text adds a personal touch, allowing readers to witness Louis' progress and growth throughout his fight.

This book has no negative aspects. It is exceptionally well edited. The book is ultimately a story of hope and triumph; it doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of childhood cancer. The author doesn't shy away from the technical details of Louis' treatments, including specific medications and procedures. I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. This is a powerful read for anyone who has been touched by cancer, either personally or through a loved one. It offers a beacon of hope for those facing similar battles and provides valuable insight into the world of childhood cancer research and treatment.
