Review of First Survivor
First Survivor by Mark Unger is an emotional and powerful book that tells the true story of Louis Unger, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive cancer, when he was only five years old. Mark Unger takes us on an emotional journey, from the moment Louis was diagnosed to the heartbreaking relapse that nearly killed him. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the heartbreak and hope that families go through when faced with a life-threatening illness.
What struck me most about this book was the strength and determination shown by the Unger family. Mark Unger's search for the best treatment for his son and his ability to work with top specialists really show how much a father's love can do. The journey that the Ungers took through different cancer centers and the exploration of new immunotherapy treatments was both heartbreaking and inspiring. You can't help but feel admiration for their strength and determination.
Mark Unger's honest and heartfelt retelling of his family's struggles really connected me to their story. His personal notes, written during the darkest times, were a powerful reminder of the strength and love that families can find in the face of adversity. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to be inspired and moved by the human spirit.
Mary Ellen Unger, Louis' mother, was a real pillar of strength, and the book beautifully captures this. Her unwavering support and strength held the family together during their toughest moments. This portrayal, together with the family's commitment to finding the best medical care for Louis, really shows the love and dedication that parents have for their children. It's truly inspiring. The book also serves as an educational tool, introducing readers to complex medical terms and the science behind immunotherapy. Having a glossary in the book was really helpful for understanding these terms, making the story accessible to everyone, even those who are not familiar with medical jargon.
I found some errors in this book, which shows that it was professionally edited. The clear and straightforward writing style made it easy to follow the Unger family's journey without getting lost in technical details. It's a powerful and captivating read that will stay with you long after you've finished reading. I couldn't find any flaws in the book; it was excellent from start to finish.
This book is a must-read for anyone who has been touched by cancer, especially neuroblastoma. I highly recommend this book and give it a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I see no reason to deduct any stars from this book. This story of survival, courage, and unwavering hope will stay with me for a long time.
