I am something of a speed reader but I must stress the importance of taking your time with this book. It is imperative to linger with each chapter and with each individual introduced. It is important to give yourself adequate time to truly take in the content of each page so as to better understand the lives and choices of the people you will meet as you join the author on this visit to Kashmir. These are heartbreaking stories and those who are strongly empathic must take care not to be broken by the knowledge this book imparts. The people in Kashmir are relying on the attention and action of the reader. This is a populace that needs to be seen, heard, understood, and elevated to a state of equality that is far above their current position beneath the boot heel of militarized occupation and the systematic destruction that has run rampant in Kashmir for decades.

I am rating this book a 5 not just for the quality of the content but also for the care with which the book has been written. The author has taken the reader on a trip of unparalleled danger and yet has paid utmost importance to protecting (or properly acknowledging) the people who we, the reader, meet as we delve into the depths of Kashmiri politics and their plight.

There are negatives but not to the writing itself. Spelling and grammar are fine. The negatives are simply the stark reality that the reader is exposed to and this is something that should be known going into this book. It details darkness, devastation, and despair. However, it is crucial to express the sadness to also showcase the power of the hope that is at the core of the Kashmiri people, particularly the women. These are strong individuals who have faced truly devastating situations in their lives and who continue to persevere because they are dedicated to forging a better world for their children and grandchildren.

This novel will make you feel things. It will not be pleasant. Just remember that you are reading from a place of privilege, outside of the horrors experienced by those trapped in the unstable paradise of Kashmir. Let the author be your guide to this part of the world and let your heart be opened to these people.
