Review of Speedy Hurled Through Havoc
Foregrounding his experiences with his father and the carnival world. Dave Letterfly Knoderer decides to present a powerful and gripping memoir that will leave you inspired. He has maintained the feel of those adventures, from carnival lighting to the grim reality of being on the road. Speedy Hurled Through Havoc is an account of resilience, loaded with David's fight against alcoholism and his way towards redemption. He talks to us about the views of carnival life and a father-son relationship that dragged them through it, told in heart-pounding storytelling.
I don't dislike anything because each element enriches the story and deepens my understanding of what the author experienced. Perhaps the extensive descriptions of the carnival operations may be a bit lengthy for some readers, but they add authenticity and great depth to the story. The emotional journey of recovery from such a difficult time and the strong portrait of family cohesion make for both a saddening and desiring read. I’d admit this is a beautiful tribute to people's ability to bounce back and the all-conquering power of family love.
I do like the personal growth element of the story, mainly the struggle of David to come clean of his addiction. Inspiring is the way he draws his strength from the community of the carnival and from his father. It also gives many times the message that with the help of imagination and dedication, beautiful things can be developed.
The way David and his father’s relationship has been shaped through mutual respect and love is a take-home lesson for me, and that is exactly what I would advise other readers to look out for throughout this narrative. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free.
I gave this book a solid 5 out of 5 stars because of the realism and honesty that this book cultivates in relation to personal struggles and triumphs. David Knoderer touts details with sincerity and emotional depth about his journey through carnivalesque highs and lows, his battle with alcoholism, and the complicated yet redemptive relationship with his father. The strengths of this book lie in the areas of inspiration, the personal growth of the author and a community at one's back, which gives it a 5-star rating. I would recommend this book to all who enjoy a memoir with insight into family, the depths one can plummet into addiction, and the beauty of redemption.
