Growing up, John spent most of his nights watching late-night shows with his father and brothers. They particularly enjoyed watching old action and sci-fi films that were terribly executed but fun to watch. Their father called these films bombs. Now a medical oncologist who has written over 188 scientific papers, he ventures outside his academic writing. Bombs Away by John Vetto is a compilation of his reviews of fifty bomb films, which he has enjoyed over the years. In this book, he showcases his passion for old films.

There are so many positive aspects to this book. The book was professionally edited. I could only find a minor grammar error. This is the first book the author is writing for a general audience, which is something completely outside of what he is used to. He did incredibly well with his narration. His reviews were witty, funny, sarcastic at times, and, most especially, fun to read. I knew the book offered reviews on old movies that were cheaply made and forgotten, but I couldn't help but feel tempted to watch them because of the way John reviewed them.

His writing displays his keen attention to details that are easily dismissed. Perhaps this same trait makes his review style peculiar. More so, he offers his personal opinions in a way that does not completely feel subjective. Readers cannot help but agree with his reasons why a film is a bomb. The book also shows the thorough research he committed himself to in order to present readers with accurate information about not just the movies but the author and actors as well. He goes further in most reviews to relay the backstory of some of the films as well as draw connections with other films. The book has a lot of spoilers, but luckily he is diligent enough to warn readers ahead of time before dropping the spoilers.

I did not notice any negative aspects of this book. Some readers may be easily offended by his wit and opinions, but then again, he issued a warning at the beginning of the book. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it was enjoyable to read. I recommend it to readers who are action and sci-fi movie enthusiasts, especially old movies made in or before 1968.

Reading this review, I gotta say, Bombs Away by John Vetto sounds like one heck of a read, cher! This medical oncologist turned movie reviewer really knows how to bring a unique perspective. The book seems to be a hoot, with witty and fun reviews of old action and sci-fi films, or as he calls them, bombs. I appreciate that he did his research and even included backstories of some films. Now, a warning to those easily offended, his humor might not be for everyone. But if you're a fan of action and sci-fi flicks, especially the oldies, this book seems like a must-read. I can't wait to get my hands on it, I give it a full 5 out of 5 stars, no doubt about it! Richly detailed world-building, felt immersive.
