Review of In Search of Mr Darcy
In her book, In Search of Mr. Darcy, Christina Ford writes about her life, her career, and the significant men in her life, including her father. She remembers her father as a metrosexual man living with five women from his family—the author, her three sisters, and her mother. She recalls her father’s role and his influence on her life and personality. He used humor as a tool in parenting to educate and inspire his daughters. She talks about her teenage boyfriends and her failed marriage to Brandon, despite her father being against the marriage. She talks about her boyfriend Reid and her live-in partner Jackson, who was much older than her. She describes her marriage to John, the birth of her two daughters, and her second divorce. She finally talks about the ten years with her live-in partner Edward and his possessive daughter, Quintana.
Christina has talked about a few women in her life, her boss, her close friends, and her own business of making TV commercials, but not much about her mother and sisters. She has focused mainly on the men and her life with them. However, Quintana and her insecurity, her need for a mother figure, her love-hate relationship with Christina, and how her dominance over her father influenced Christina both emotionally and physically are evident in the narration. Christina’s rejection of Charlie's proposal led to her demotion from her office. Reid was one disgusting boyfriend who spat on her face in a public place in a fit of rage and jealousy. Christina’s story is a testimony to what a woman seeks in a man and what men want in their women. It is also evident that love takes on a new meaning with every new relationship and is defined differently by different people.
The memoir is brutally honest, and the language is rich, bold, and colorful—full of humor, quotes and cliches, four-letter words and swearing, references to various books and famous characters, movies, TV shows, musical bands, and also nuggets of wisdom, sarcasm, and philosophical thoughts as she analyzes every situation using similes and metaphors. The author has freely described and discussed rough sex, sexual fantasies, one-night stands and casual sex, her mental trauma, and her need for alcohol. Mr. Darcy, one of the main characters from Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice, a wealthy man and a noble character at heart, represents an ideal man—prideful, in love, helpful, and willing to change himself for his love. There are many quotations and references from Jane Austen’s novel, and the author identifies herself with Elizabeth, the protagonist of the novel. The title of the book quite suitably portrays the author’s expectations for an ideal partner. There is nothing to disapprove of or criticize about the book, and I have a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars for it.
This is an unforgettable memoir with a positive message. Christina writes that no experience is ever wasted if you learn something. I completely agree with the author when she mentions a quote: ‘The world is full of monsters with friendly faces and angels full of scars.’ It reflects on the complexity of human nature, and that looks can be deceptive. The last chapter is very insightful, and the epilogue is quite contemplative. I would recommend the book to people who like to read contemplative memoirs about marriage, relationships, and life lessons from a woman’s perspective.
