“The Perils of a Loss Adjuster” by Richard Thurstan is a book where the author recounts his experiences working as a loss adjuster. He equally reveals the good, bad, and ugly sides of working as one. Sometimes, these stories are so humorous that you’ll want the author to keep going on and on.

The book begins with the definition of a loss adjuster: someone who accesses an individual or company’s claim from an independent point of view. He achieves a fair outcome by attending to the concerns of both the policyholder and insurer in accordance with policy.

I learned more about how insurance works, including the processes involved before claims for damage to property are approved. I also got educated on situations that could lead to a claim denial. In the book's epilogue, the author lists reasons for leaving the profession. I see these reasons as valid, as one should undertake a job that brings him or her peace of mind, not the opposite.

The author’s writing style is simple and easily comprehensible. He properly explained insurance concepts, such that even a layman can understand, and I applaud him for that. Again, I love how the author divided different perils into chapters and took time to recount his experience and methods of claim assessment under each chapter.

I have no negatives to point out in this book, and I find it humorous and educational. I found no errors while reading, giving it a flawlessly edited look. I award it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars, especially due to its simple nature and proper organisation.

This book is recommended to readers who are interested in insurance and, of course, being a loss adjuster. Again, this book is ideal for those who aren’t fulfilled in their careers and seek the courage and inspiration to switch to their desired profession.
