Review of First Survivor
THE FIRST SURVIVOR
The book “The First Survivor” by Mark Unger is an excellent book to read. It was well-written and tugs at your heartstrings. The author, Mark Unger, shares his experience with his younger son, Louis, who is diagnosed with neuroblastoma. A life-threatening illness, a childhood cancer that almost killed Louis and destroyed their entire family.
Life is not promised to anyone, and life will throw curve balls, and this is what happened to the Unger family. A happy and close-knit family with normal daily routines became disrupted and different suddenly. Mark’s wife, Mary Ellen, noticed their younger child, Louis, was walking strangely. Also, his mood became very quiet, which was very odd to Mark and Mary Ellen Unger. Louis loves playing with his older brother, Harry, who is two years older. They were best friends, and they had fun getting into trouble together. There was a sudden drop in Louis’s physical and mental response, which set off an alarm of fear for Mark and Mary Ellen. Three-year-old Louis was whisked off to his pediatrician, Dr. Gregory Germain, near New Haven, CT. Unfortunately, Louis was misdiagnosed with Perthes disease. By Thanksgiving, Louis’s condition had worsened, and his pediatrician suggested Mark and Mary Ellen Unger meet him at the Children’s Emergency Room after reviewing recent bloodwork. The nightmare begins.
With Louis enduring hard tests and procedures with no complaints and displaying strength and courage for his parents, eventually this will save his life. Mark is researching and documenting medical information for Louis and trying to keep his sanity. Mary Ellen is skilled at nurturing their two boys and trying to keep their lives as normal as possible. Harry, the older brother, being a good boy and listening to his grandmother while his parents were in the hospital with Louis depicts a family of love, determination, courage, and great teamwork that contributed to Louis being the first survivor of neuroblastoma.
It was a great book, and I highly recommend it. I was impressed with the Unger family's determination and teamwork to help Louis recover from his illness. This is why I gave the book a 4. I am so happy for the Unger family and every family who wins against the disease of cancer.
I rate this book a 4.
