Niching Up: The Narrower the Market, the Bigger the Prize, by Chris Dreyer, has been an absolute pleasure to read. I truly think it deserves an excellent score of 5/5.

Niching Up is a good general guide for those entrepreneurs who might be considering finding their perfect place in a specific market. Dreyer describes their own experience extensively, giving stories and anecdotes of their own business ventures and how they ended up deciding to specialize in certain niches. They do it in such a way that it feels like a relaxed conversation with a friend, learning becomes comfortable instead of annoying and boring.

The book feels genuine and informative in many ways. The language used is just formal enough to know the author has the experience needed to give advice. However, it still retains all sorts of colloquial expressions and analogies based on popular culture — from Star Wars to poker and baseball — making the book an easy and engaging read. Most of the advice and theories given are thoroughly supported through references to other authors in the field and further bibliography you can go to, in case you want more information on any of the topics mentioned.

I would also like to mention the transparency the author seems to emit when sharing their knowledge. The cons to niching are not avoided, quite the opposite actually, they are confronted head-on with a chapter all to themselves, and it is reiterated that niching up might not be for everyone.
The editing alone makes this book an enjoyable experience, I was unable to find a single typo or grammar mistake. The chapters give a comfortable division to the different topics, and the extra tips that don’t fit in the text itself are given a separate text bubble where they stand out without interrupting the flow of the reading.
