I am honestly starting this review wanting to let everyone know that I am not truly sure I have the right words to summarize this family’s journey that turned their world upside down and how it has impacted me. I can only hope that I never have to experience what they went through and if I did that, I would have even half the strength they all showed. Their 3-year-old son Louis was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. This at the time was a disease with zero chance survival. I am super emotional after reading this book. Mark Unger, author of this book and father of Louis, did an amazing job at sharing their courageous battle and how they fought this disease head on and never even entertained the thought of giving up! Opening himself up and sharing his, Mary Ellen (Louis’ mother), Harry (Louis’ brother) and Louis’ experience to help others is such a wonderful gift to give. This family’s courage and resilience are so inspirational! I love the way they taught their boys about the cancer by teaching them there are bad cells and good cells. That the cells are at war and they are fighting the bad cells with artillery, guns, and arrows to help them relate to what was going on in Louis’ body. I also appreciate how he shared his personal notes and pictures through out this battle to help us see and understand. I’m sure it was really hard for them to go back and relive those moments to put into writing for others. Thank you to Mark and Mary Ellen for being such amazing and courageous people. Because of your diligence, love and courage, your family, along with the team you worked with to fight for your son, other families have a fighting chance. You have saved your son’s and many others’ lives because you believed ... There are no dead ends, only new paths. I love that message you shared with us and I will always remember it! Louis is such a courageous and inspiring young man. Even though I don’t know him in person, Mark has shared a piece of him and his family at their most vulnerable moments, and I will keep that treasure in my heart as I go through life. I definitely recommend this book to others to read. I give this book 5 stars. There is nothing I would change, this story is written from the heart and it shows. The editing is wonderful; the writing was very clear so we could understand. I love that definition of the medical terms and history have been added to the end of this book. I will be sharing this story with everyone I know.
