Review of Janey and the Miniatures
Janey and the Miniatures is a book written by Heath White that tells the story of a pregnant cat who unexpectedly appeared at the author's doorstep. She was almost a kitten herself, and she brought the father of the kittens once she started trusting them. They named him Snow Leopard and took them in. As the reader progresses through the book, they are able to see the newborn kittens and even watch them leave the nest one or two at a time once they are old enough.
At the beginning of the book, the author included photographs of her cats and kittens, which was something that I really appreciated. With this method, the reader can identify the book's most important cats. Despite the fact that unfortunate circumstances led them to their doorstep, I found the narrative to be emotionally moving, and I was relieved that they had found owners who provided such affection. I was grateful that she included definitions, particularly those definitions that a person who is not from South Africa would not be familiar with. As a South African, I recognized the Afrikaans words used in the book. I was also pleased to see familiar locations in the book, particularly the well-known Jacaranda trees that were found in Pretoria, which is where I had previously resided.
Although I am not a cat person, this does not mean that I do not enjoy reading stories about cats, seeing them cause chaos, or simply admiring them while they go about their lives. The author's sense of humour was wonderful, and I found myself smiling quite a few times. When the author mentioned loadshedding, I couldn't help but chuckle because it is something that I, along with a great number of other South Africans, can relate to. I am simply generally appreciative of the fact that I was able to read about poor Janey and her adorable kittens, and of course I can't forget about Snow Leopard.
I gave this book a perfect score of five out of five stars because there was nothing about it that I found to dislike. There are a lot of stories about cats and even dogs, and I really enjoyed reading about them all. Additionally, adding photos throughout the book was a wonderful touch. I believe a professional edited the book because I did not find any errors.
This is a book that I would recommend to everyone who has a passion for cats, particularly those who enjoy reading stories that are based on real occurrences and include illustrations of real cats and kittens.
