Let me introduce Louis, who is the son of the author, and at the age of three he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer. When the cancer reached his head, the task appeared virtually impossible. However, Louis’s family, doctors, and friends did not allow this and stood by him to fight for his life. For the next seven years, Louis heroically withstood one treatment after another that gradually drove him closer and closer to the state of remission—the triumph of hope, love, and tenacity.

When Mary Ellen's maternal instincts sensed something amiss in Louis's stride, she swiftly sought medical attention, unleashing a cascade of tests that confirmed her worst fears: Louis had stage 4 neuroblastoma. The family's world was shattered. As Louis's primary caregiver, Mary Ellen stood unwaveringly by his side, navigating a labyrinth of medical hurdles. Mark Unger, Louis's father, dedicated himself to finding cutting-edge treatments, fueled by an unrelenting passion to save his son. Thus began a seven-year saga of unrelenting struggle as Louis faced a childhood marked by anguish and resilience. This remarkable journey is vividly captured in Mark Unger's memoir, First Survivor.

This book was amazing, exceeding my expectations in every way. A standout feature I really liked was the exhaustive glossary, which enabled me to effortlessly navigate complex terminology and maintain a smooth reading flow. The author's masterful writing style made the book very interesting to read, skillfully conveying the characters' inner worlds and vulnerabilities. Mark Unger's memoir, First Survivor, was a truly remarkable read. I found absolutely nothing to hate or dislike about this book.

I give this book a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The book was very well edited with no errors. Louis's journey shines with hope and resilience. I would recommend this book to readers navigating the darkest depths of childhood cancer or life's challenges.
