Review of Deceit
I would rate the book "Deceit" by Vernon Baumrind a 5/5. It is a compelling true story that delves into the emotional and legal turmoil of a father, Vernon, battling for the custody of his two young children against overwhelming odds. The narrative revolves around Vernon's tumultuous journey, using unconventional methods to expose the truth about his wife Linda's infidelity and her involvement with Dr. James Ewing, a predatory gynecologist. The book not only highlights a personal struggle but also marks a significant legal precedent in extramarital affair litigation.
Vernon Baumrind's life takes a dramatic turn when he discovers his wife Linda's extramarital affair with Ewing, a gynecologist who exploits his position for his gain. Determined to protect his children and secure custody, Vernon faces formidable legal challenges. The story takes readers through his meticulous efforts to gather evidence, including wiretap technology, which is pivotal in turning the tide in his favor. As Vernon navigates the complexities of the legal system, the narrative exposes the darker side of human nature, and the lengths individuals will go to pursue their desires.
The author’s storytelling is gripping and emotionally charged, drawing the reader into the personal and legal battles faced. The detailed recounting of events keeps the reader engaged, making it hard to put the book down. The book offers a fascinating insight into the legal system and the complexity of custody battles, particularly those involving infidelity and the trouble a father faces to get custody of his children.
I enjoyed Vernon’s dedication to his children and his ability to put them before anyone else, even his own desires. Upon learning about his wife’s deceit, he gets angry and intends to catch them red-handed, he even contemplates countries where committing a murder would have been justified. However, his dedication to his children and their well-being overcomes any other desire he has, he takes steps to make sure they will be safe and remain in his custody while controlling his anger and grief. Linda is a complex figure torn between her desires and responsibilities and Ewing is portrayed as a manipulative predator. I found it hard to feel any sympathy for these two characters.
This book imparts valuable lessons on humility, perseverance, and the consequences of one’s actions. It underscores the importance of integrity and the impact of personal choices on loved ones. The author has also done a wonderful job editing this book and there were no grammatical errors that I could find. I loved the author’s writing style and appreciated the pace and inclusion of legal technicalities. I found no negatives in this book.
In conclusion, "Deceit" by Vernon Baumrind is a riveting account of a father's relentless fight for his children, set against the backdrop of a complex legal battle involving infidelity and betrayal. The book's strengths lie in its engaging narrative, insightful legal exploration, and profound moral lessons. It is a powerful and thought-provoking read. The author’s story of humility and perseverance triumphing over arrogance and status is both inspiring and cautionary, delivering a timeless message about conscience and consequences.
