Review of First Survivor
Mark Unger's book,First Survivor, tells the brave story of young Louis Unger, who battled aggressive neuroblastoma as a toddler. His mother, Mary Ellen, noticed that three-year-old Louis was starting to walk awkwardly and was becoming less talkative.
Over the next few months, Louis felt worse and worse. He became very tired and weak. His parents took him to see a specialist, who took some X-rays. The doctors were worried about what they saw in the X-rays. The doctor told them to go straight to the emergency room at Yale New Haven Hospital, where he would be waiting for them.
Ellen and Mark did everything they could to support their son, finding the best medical care and talking to top experts. But it was Louis' strong determination that was key to his victory over this terrible illness. This book shares their inspiring story of hope and perseverance. I was especially impressed by his careful record-keeping, especially how they documented questions. This simple yet effective method helped with clear communication and informed decision-making, making sure every concern was fully addressed. By doing this, the Ungers created a team effort where parents, doctors, and caregivers worked together for Louis' recovery, providing a valuable lesson for anyone going through a similar situation. As I read Louis' story, I couldn't help but think of the countless other children who may not have the same access to quality healthcare, loving support, and resources that Louis had. It's heartbreaking to realize that many young ones face similar challenges without the same level of care and support, leaving me feeling sad and concerned for their well-being.
The writing in the book was professionally edited, and there were no negative aspects.
I highly recommend First Survivor by Mark Unger and rate it a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars. With no dislikes, I found it to be a compelling and easy read. This book is great for anyone wanting to learn more about cancer and the challenges families go through.
