I've always hated cheating because it destroys trust between two people and the families involved. The author of this book, Vernon Baumrind, is a man scorned by his wife's extramarital escapades. He narrates how his once-happy marriage with Linda, which produced two children, David and Jade, was ruined by the gynecologist, Dr. Ewing, who presides over his wife.

Vernon notices a change in his wife's attitude; she becomes colder to him, which baffles him, putting him through quite an emotional ordeal. However, when he discovers the reason behind his wife's actions, he resorts to getting a divorce. Still, in order to gain custody of his children, he would need substantial evidence, so he resorts to tapping their landline phone, an attorney for legal advice, and even detectives to spy on his wife. Although some of his actions were against the law, he deemed them necessary if he wanted any shot at getting custody of his children. Will he succeed? I believe there's only one way to find out.

Deceit: A True Story of Domestic Infidelity and Betrayal with Salacious Details Recorded by Wiretap by Vernon Baumrind was not an easy read, mainly because I was disgusted at Linda and Dr. Ewing's actions. I was even more disappointed in Dr. Ewing's behavior because he was supposed to be a professional but instead preyed upon his counsel. The author's pain is palpable, and although cheating among spouses is rampant and not new, cheating with one's doctor is truly surprising to me. The book is educational and informative for both adults and couples; it highlights the emotional destruction cheating can bring to a family and the consequences of pornography and sexual misconduct.

I found no negative side to this book and appreciate Vernon's honesty in sharing his experiences, as it couldn't have been easy. I also commend him for remaining kind and rational during this ordeal. I spotted no errors while reading, showing that this book was exceptionally well edited. For all the positive aspects described above, I'm rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. Due to its high sexual content, I recommend this book to adults and couples; those interested in family law can also pick it up.
