Any golfer with aspirations of playing at the professional level would benefit from having an instructional guide. Kalliope Barlis' Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book is just that—a compact yet jam-packed how-to book. Barlis uses the vocabulary of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), a psychotherapeutic method, to convey her ideas, offering a different approach from traditional golf instruction. While familiarizing the reader with the basic moves of the game, Barlis emphasizes that the most important muscle to strengthen is the mind. The book provides some basic mental exercises and a few limited physical drills.

In this book, Barlis employs many of the basic principles and approaches found in her previous work. However, here she elaborates on the nuances of the game. What I appreciate most about this book is how Barlis delves into the depths of what we already know about golf. For example, we understand that practice is essential for improvement. Yet, Barlis argues that practice alone is not enough. If focus and intention aren't sufficient ingredients for a successful routine, what is? Barlis asserts that reflection and cultivating a positive mindset about what we've accomplished are key.

The book offers a variety of practical exercises. These are straightforward and, if practiced consistently, could lead to significant improvement. I particularly like the at-home practices, which include various mindfulness techniques and balance exercises. Combined with watching tournaments, these practices could help maintain your game during the off-season. The book also emphasizes the importance of engaging all your senses in the game, providing a comprehensive strategy both internally and externally, which is another reason I appreciate it.

I have no complaints about this book. It goes straight to the heart of the matter and delivers exactly what it intends. There is nothing that I find potentially boring or uninteresting. In fact, I believe the content and its presentation could serve as a model.

Because it is intended as a short book, you can easily carry it around and dip into it for useful reminders. I have said it before and can say it again: there is no reason to rate this book anything less than 5 out of 5 stars. I believe this assessment is justified and not overly flattering.
