"Searching for Sanity: The Decline of Public Education in the Early 21st Century" by David R. Carter follows the life of David, a passionate teacher with over 15 years of experience. It provides an insightful account of how education has changed over the years, leaving veteran teachers feeling disenfranchised and frustrated. The traditional classroom environment has been eroded by the influx of technology. Compared to back in the day, students now spend their free periods in the library talking, which was initially built for reading and researching, and teachers walk on eggshells to avoid parent-teacher conflict. Even the introduction of controversial topics, such as transgender studies, at a young age left him questioning the direction of education.

Just like David had promised in the initial chapters of this book, he made it an easy read and an interesting one. It is evident from his writing that teaching was more than a job for him; it was what I’d rather like to describe as his passion. His passion for education is evident throughout the book. His teaching style made a long-lasting impression on his students, and the collection of notes from his students shared in the book illustrates how much he was loved and appreciated by them over the years. Emails from former students and parents pay tribute to his unique approach to teaching and the mark he left on their lives. In addition to his passion for teaching, David's work ethic was admirable. He never took a day off, except when necessary. He was always excited to try new things, so he took on multiple jobs. His versatility and dedication to providing for himself and his family added another dimension to his character.

I rate this book a 5 out of 5. I found nothing worth disliking about this book. I rather strongly agree with David that the educational system in the 21st century is rapidly declining. So, I recommend this book to teachers and other educational professionals.
