We have had to deal with many particular and common-to-other-nations issues in different phases of our existential history, and through it all, there are special attributes that have made Americans stand out among the rest, and these explain our collective achievements and position in a global setting. Unfortunately, in this generation, there seems to be a sharp decline in our consciousness of who we are and the long journeys that have shaped our country and existence. The incidents during the last elections, the pandemic, and the current trends are manifestations of this sad reality.

We are allowing ourselves to be consumed again by conspiracy theories, hatred, discrimination, greed, manipulation, and divisive politics. Worse still, our position and relevance in global affairs are being challenged, with the Ukraine/Russia and Israel/Palestine conflicts being ready references. Is anyone worried about these? That we could be living in the shadow of our past glory? That we might find ourselves entangled in the very things our founding fathers, heroes, and heroines fought to liberate us from?

I think American Papers: My Love Letters to America by Jayme Alencar de Oliveira Filho is a timely intervention to these issues, in that the discourse aims to revamp in us the American spirit and inculcate in us the American values and ideals that have shaped our history and placed us in a pivotal position in the world, with the expected outcomes of liberating our minds from negativities and divisive tendencies and redirecting us to the path of justice, fairness, prosperity, and patriotism.

The book covers essential aspects of our existential struggles, the instruments and institutions of American governance, and the unique attributes of the American population. I especially enjoyed reading "American Poem" and was really grateful for our rich natural and human resources. I was awakened by the contributions of Thomas Jefferson, emboldened by the sacrifices of the Continental Army, and motivated by the patriotic acts of Francis Scott Key. I encourage every American to pick up a copy of this book. The feelings and empowerment that come from reading it can help us regain our footing. Citizens of other countries will also find this book impactful, as they will get to know about all we've been through as a people and hopefully draw some insights from it to shape their own history and existence.

American Papers: My Love Letters to America earns five out of five stars for its in-depth, thought-provoking content and error-free text. I didn't dislike anything in the book.

I'm particularly interested in how the author addresses the decline in American consciousness. It's a problem that many of us have been concerned about. I'm also curious about the "American Poem" you mentioned. It sounds like a powerful piece.

Thanks for the great review.

I think it’s a worldwide issue, with an underlying element of angst, fear and possible greed. She is honest with her views and her use of prose is rather lovely. Nice review.

I appreciate how well this review elaborates on what the book is, in terms of themes and value. But, from the review, it seems the book lacks in recognizing the value of indigenous and black people roles in constructing America. And I personally find the emphasis on military to be fairly uncomfortable. One can be proud of their nation without wanting to gloat about enacting violence on others. Overall, just not a book I'm interested in.

Seems to be a thought-provoking book indeed. As a non-American, I can say there are many values I appreciate and indeed many things happening where questions need to be asked. Hate, discrimination, greed and similar need to make place again for justice and fairness.
