In 2001, Louis's family received devastating news on Thanksgiving Day of his diagnosis of neuroblastoma at Yale. This marked the beginning of a long and challenging journey of treatment. Determined to save their son, Mark Unger and Mary Ellen embarked on a mission to find the best possible care, consulting multiple doctors, exploring extensive research, and interpreting complex medical jargon. Meanwhile, they also had to balance their attention and care for Louis's brother, Harry, while providing emotional support and love to their ailing three-year-old son.

In his book First Survivor, Mark Unger shares the heart-wrenching story of his family's experience after his son Louis was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. The ordeal began when Mark's wife, Mary Ellen, noticed changes in Louis's behavior, such as an unusual walk and decreased talkativeness. Initially, pediatricians misdiagnosed Louis with Legg-Perthes disease, but as his condition deteriorated, he became increasingly fatigued and irritable and started taking daytime naps. After multiple medical visits, the Ungers found themselves in a chaotic children's emergency room, surrounded by doctors and uncertainty, facing the terrifying possibility that Louis might have leukemia.

I liked how Louis diligently followed his doctors' advice and exhibited remarkable courage and positivity throughout his treatment. His cheerful attitude won over the medical team caring for him. Meanwhile, his parents, Mark and Mary Ellen, presented a united front, ensuring Louis received the best possible care. At the same time, they also made sure to devote attention and love to Louis's younger brother, Harry, aged 5, balancing their care and support between the two siblings.

The book is flawless and exceptional, with no errors or aspects that I dislike. However, it does contain some explicit language, which is worth mentioning, but doesn't diminish its overall quality and excellence.

This book deserves a rating of 5 out of 5 stars, as it masterfully conveys a profound sense of hope and emotional resonance. I strongly recommend that anyone searching for an inspiring and uplifting read add this book to their list.
