"(dis)Empowered" by Ellen Busch is a gripping personal memoir that recounts her lifelong battle with dyslexia and the subsequent low self-esteem and trauma caused by years of severe bullying in school and an abusive marriage as an adult. Busch takes readers on a profound journey of self-discovery as she transforms adversity into empowerment through perseverance, courage, and surrendering to a higher power.

Diagnosed as dyslexic in the 1970s, Busch faced tremendous challenges in a public school system that wrote her off as incapable rather than providing appropriate support. Relentless bullying by classmates further eroded her self-worth. However, Busch's resilient spirit is instilled from a young age through the unconditional love and support of her parents, who refuse to accept the label imposed on their daughter and fight tirelessly for her needs. This early nurturing of her inner strength serves Busch well as she faces even greater hurdles as an adult.

The editing of the book is well done, with no grammatical errors, providing a seamless read. Escaping an abusive marriage in middle age leaves Busch shattered, unemployed, and living with her parents. At her lowest point, she surrenders fully to God, igniting a profound spiritual awakening. This pivots her life in an unexpected direction of personal growth as she transforms adversity into empowerment through intensive self-development programs. Busch emerges from this dark period profoundly self-aware with a newfound sense of purpose and the ability to love herself fully. There are no negative aspects of the book that I disagree with or dislike.

Rich with poignant stories detailing both her childhood struggles and adult healing journey, "(dis)Empowered" is an inspirational memoir for anyone facing adversity or trauma. Busch demonstrates how embracing vulnerability, asking for help from loved ones, and spiritual surrender can catalyze positive change. Her courage in sharing such an intimate journey makes this a compelling read that will resonate widely. Overall, "(dis)Empowered" is a moving testimony to the resilience of the human spirit. I would rate it 5 out of 5.
