First Survivor by Mark Unger trails the journey of Louis, the son of Mark Unger and Mary Ellen. He was diagnosed with a disease known as neuroblastoma at the tender age of three. It all starts when the mother, Mary Ellen, discovers that her son walks strangely. After deliberation, they took him to a pediatrician, who sent them to the Yale School of Medicine. Since then, he has struggled to survive in this phase of his new life, going through medical processes and practices. Some of the medical processes he passed through are C.O.G. protocol, stem cell transplant, bone marrow transplant, biological marker, chemotherapy, ganglioneuroblastoma, and others.

The author explains complex medical terminology to the readers. The solemn moment in the book is when Harry, Louis's brother, realizes that his brother is going through difficult moments and how it affects his parents. First Survivor analyses the emotional moments as the family fights for the life of their beloved.

The book preaches hope and emotional strength. I like how the parents embrace hope and faith. The parents believe in the impossible and ask questions at every junction; they sacrifice their time and resources for the little chance of success, as was explained to them by the doctors. The parents choose the best for their son and follow the path that promises better treatment even when it requires them to leave Yale.

Mark Unger presented an exceptional writing style, it is descriptive, informational, insightful, and educational, as it conveys multifaceted emotions. Mark Unger's ability to relate complex information conventionally is a positive aspect. There is nothing to dislike about the book. I truly learned from the book. There are no negative aspects to it.

First Survivor by Mark Unger is a book that exemplifies the possibility of succeeding amid challenges and difficulties. Following my observations above, I would rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. I would recommend the book to cancer patients and healthcare providers. Readers who love books on human compassion will appreciate the book.
