First Survivor by Mark Unger is an uplifting and poignant read that I would recommend to people who are going through rough situations. The narrative begins with clear info drops on the main character's family and circumstances, giving the reader moments that you can be sympathetic or sympathize with and continue to sympathize with as the telling goes along. In summary, this book is a story about Louis, who is a fighter and survivor, and how his family dealt with what was practically a death sentence back then.

One of the best things I like about this book is the way the author includes his notes on the many hospital visits and Louis’s condition throughout, as well as the little email updates that are spread out in it. I also enjoyed how literary devices are used throughout the novel, such as metaphors and foreshadowing. The depths of emotion put into this work also deserve recognition, as you can feel hope, optimism, and dread making it a very real experience. The honest and truthful reaction to the ups and downs of having a deadly condition brings the story to life in a way that impacts a person.

There is nothing negative that comes to mind when I think of what to say about this tale. The grammar and editing throughout are great, and the added glossary at the back helps tremendously, as well as some words being bolded to cast a spotlight on important ones. Overall, the reading experience is great and emotional.

In conclusion, I would rate First Survivor five out of five stars. The storyline is presented fantastically; the editing is well done, and when done reading, it leaves you feeling fulfilled. This narrative is definitely worth five stars. I would recommend this to readers in their late teens and older who pursue nonfiction works specifically about a person's trials.
