Review of Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book
If you are a golfer and want to take your game to the next level, you better have Kalliope Barlis' Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book in your possession. This guide isn't your standard "pick up a club and swing it this way" kind of book. Instead, it goes under the hood and tells you how to work your brain better so you can better manage your golf game. It also offers a variety of mental exercises to improve your performance, with the book's overall premise being that if you handle your mind, you will play golf better and faster.
Kalliope Barlis builds on many of the principles and techniques she has used in her teachings. In this volume, she elucidates more of the game's subtleties. Barlis takes us through little details that a lot of players probably don't think about when they're on the course. What stands out most strongly in this book is Barlis's emphasis on diving deep into the fundamentals of the game. She makes the analogy that we all know how important it is to practice in order for us to get better at our craft. But, as she points out, simply practicing does not automatically lead to improvement. Practicing is not really a meaningful activity unless one is intensely focusing on what one is doing (a concept she discusses further in the chapter titled "Practice Smart").
Numerous straightforward practical exercises can be followed. They are uncomplicated to execute and, if performed regularly, would likely yield considerable benefits. I especially appreciate the at-home practices. You can use some mental techniques, visualize your game, and do various things to maintain your focus. The book also emphasizes the importance of using all your senses while playing. Golf involves internal as well as external strategies, and I like how the book attends to both sides of that equation and doesn't leave anything out.
I have no problems with this book because it achieves what it sets out to achieve. The author is direct, but not dull. Because it is a brief book, you could easily carry it around and read it whenever you needed a little reminder or boost.
This book fully deserves its 5-star rating. I found nothing to dislike about it. It tries to cover everything you might need to know about the game of golf while still being brief, which is hard to do. I found it very well written and edited (easy to read, understand, and follow), and I did not find any errors. I have no doubt that the book's editing is top-notch.
