First Survivor by Mark Unger is described as a “real-life thriller” as it follows Unger’s life when his child is diagnosed with cancer; and the realities that creep in throughout this time such as insurance problems and caretaking. While it is a “real-life thriller,” I also find it to be a thank you letter to all of the people involved in helping the Unger family navigate the unknowns of their three year old’s cancer diagnosis.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars purely for its content! This book reads like a diary, with each chapter representing a day in the long journey to recovery. Due to each day's verbatim entries, the spelling and grammar are as chaotic as the day itself which was a beautiful addition to the story as well as inappropriate language that makes you feel every emotion of the moment. Each chapter presents a new reality, fact, or problem that just makes you want to scream for them and pitch in to help. Mark Unger’s writing is eloquent and beautiful. The reader can feel every emotion throughout his prose and that is what makes this book special.

This book makes you laugh, cry, research, and appreciate the healthy life you live now. I am so grateful to read this and peer into what it means to be human and a parent in a trying time. Every reader can take away an impactful life lesson from this non-fiction title. Read this if you are looking for a heart-breaking and heart-warming story that forces you to reevaluate what it means to be human.

I cannot recommend this book enough. Thank you to Mark Unger for writing a book that is so impactful for future readers to experience and empathize with. This is a great story about life when facing the probability of death.
