I've read many books, but hands down, "Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag" is one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read. Kalliope Barlis has written this book so wonderfully. It's a short and quick read. I went through this entire book in less than a day.
The advice, the words, the writing—all of it was so impactful. There are many instances in this small book that made me do a double take on life as well as golf. Golf can be incredibly difficult and demanding, especially when you have the wrong approach towards it, which is something I struggled with for a long time.
Even my friends went through the same thing, yet there are some who are better than me, and I always wondered what I was lacking. While reading this book, there were some particular statements that took away this miasmic brain fog in my head, and I was able to think and do better.
For instance, “Everything in this world, this universe, is reflected in every cell of your body.” This quote made me have an epiphany. I reread it multiple times, and I still think about it.
"How you think can always change for the better. After all, it is just a thought." This is another instance that made me have a 'whoa' moment.
Like the ones above, there are many more instances that convinced me that this book has absolutely no flaws. From start to finish, it had me so engrossed that I forgot I was reading.
This book was an experience of a lifetime, and I just know that I will be rereading it over and over again. And every time I do, I know that there will be some new lesson to learn, some new thing to improve, and some new way to look at life itself. No non-fiction book has ever had me in a chokehold the way this has. Kalliope Barlis is a genius with words, and that is no exaggeration.
The fact that she could teach me more in a small, pocket-sized book than a thousand-page comprehensive guide ever has is always going to be a reminder of why words and the way you write them matter. While being gentle, she is also severe in a way that everyone wishes their teachers and parents would be.
This book, in all definitions, is life in about a hundred pages, and I believe this explores life beyond golf as well. So if you don't play golf, you could still read this and learn to appreciate life and how much you can change your mindset and approach towards things, along with what a wonderful and skillful game golf is.
I recommended this book to my friends, and even before they could finish it, they came to me and told me how brilliant this book is. The editing of this book is brilliant. There were illustrations for reference and comprehensive bullet points, and the way the book has been divided into sections was also excellent. All efforts were made to have this book deliver, and it really did. If I could give it a six-star rating instead of a five-star rating, I would. Every single star is deserved, and every time I reread it, I know I'll still continue giving it a five.
This book explores so much more than just golf and expertise. It explores thought, mindset, and perception and is the most brilliant short novel I have ever read. I will, in fact, keep a copy of this book with me, annotate the words and instances that hit home, and remind myself of them every day, not just to play better at golf but to play better at the game called life.
