In his enlightening book Working From Home: Making it Work For You, author Thomas Engblom, PhD. brings his vast experience and knowledge, together with the findings of multiple supporting studies to share what it takes to be successful at working from home.
One has only to look at the cottage industries of medieval times to know that working remotely is not a modern concept. However with the development of the COVID pandemic in 2020, working from home became the global norm and for many is now the perfect job situation, while increasing job dissatisfaction and less than perfect working conditions for others.
Drawing on his own experience (going from being a 'C' student to earning a PhD.), Engblom explains the many benefits of remote work such as reduced associated costs including transportation, work clothing, and child care; the time saved from commuting, and increased job independence. The author details how to set up a home work space for maximum success and outlines how to balance the home/job dynamics. While a definite proponent for working from home, in order to be fair the author also discusses the downside factors to consider, including reduced interaction with co-workers, and possible depression from lowered job productivity as a result of home distractions.
In Working From Home: Making it Work for You Engblom states that "Success is best measuring not by what you have become, but by your job satisfaction and your self-satisfaction", and applying Herzberg's two factor theory on job satisfaction and dissatisfaction, believes that working from home can greatly increase job satisfaction.
I found Working From Home: Making it Work for You to be the 'go to' book for everything you need to know or consider about working from home. Thomas Engblom presents a comprehensive and credible guideline to being a successful remote worker. This book is very well edited, and easy to follow and understand. Therefore I give it a rating of 5/5.
