Maui Misadventures: True Tales of Chickens, a Cat, and Homeschooling Around the Island by HS Moon is a book about Moon’s misadventures with her husband, her children, and their pets in Maui. The book begins with an introduction telling readers that this is not a Maui travel guide, but family stories as her fragmented mind recollected them. The book has two parts in the format of humorous memoirs.

Part One consists of Moon’s family and their interactions with Rumba (a stray cat) and a family of chickens. It is also a humorous memoir of the transition of Moon’s family from Northern California to Maui, showing us unique joys and challenges. In addition, Part One shows how a family typically lived on the island, from dealing with unusual animals to an excess of certain fruits. Her older child illustrated Part One’s images.

Part Two is about traveling to other Maui towns on “homeschooling field trips,” and adjusting to life in Maui. This part includes culinary experiments, family activities, and inland adventures. In contrast to Part One, ChatGPT-4o and Canva illustrated Part Two’s images.

I liked Moon's humor, especially in the conversations between “Maui” and “the Sun” and the segment on philosophical chickens. I also liked that the stories show Moon’s ability to compromise with her children and stand her ground when necessary, giving readers a viewpoint on parenting. The book includes countless funny stories, such as a wild Jeep ride during the rain, that will captivate readers from beginning to end. I also liked how the book makes you feel like you are in Hawaii. Lastly, I enjoyed learning new Hawaiian words like “Mele Kalikimaka” (Merry Christmas).

I disliked, however, the implementation of ChatGPT to make jokes and illustrations. The book would have worked perfectly with her daughter’s illustrations and her unique sense of humor. Despite my dislike, it did not hamper my enjoyment of the book and did not justify reducing its rating. The book is well-edited and contains minimal grammatical errors. In addition, it only has a few instances of minor borderline profanity, making it accessible to all readers. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this book to adults and parents who like to read family stories with their children. Younger children may not understand some things. But with parental guidance, this book can be a treat for those who like funny family stories, learn about the curiosity and innocence of children, and learn about how parents raise their kids on an island away from the mainland.

Rick Gualtieri's hilarious and action-packed book "Maui Misadventures" combines comedy and urban fantasy elements. The narrative centres on Bill, the main character, who sets out for what should have been a laid-back vacation on Maui but ends up getting entangled in a string of paranormal disasters. The novel is a fun read because it has a lot of surprising turns, funny language, and oddball characters. Gualtieri's fast-paced, whimsical language is ideal for those seeking a light-hearted escape with a hint of the bizarre. Comedic fantasy enthusiasts will find "Maui Misadventures" to be a fun journey that strikes a balance between humour and adventure.

"Maui Misadventures" by HS Moon is a humorous memoir about her family's life and adventures in Maui. The book is divided into two parts: the first focuses on the family's interactions with a stray cat, chickens, and their transition from Northern California to island life; the second covers homeschooling field trips, culinary experiments, and island adventures. The reviewer enjoys Moon's humor and parenting insights, though they found the use of AI for illustrations less appealing. Despite this, the book is highly rated and recommended for those who enjoy lighthearted family stories.

Maui Misadventures sounds like a delightful and humorous read about family life in Maui, capturing both the joys and quirks of island living. I’m intrigued by the blend of personal anecdotes and cultural insights, especially the unique family dynamics and interactions with local wildlife. The use of AI for illustrations is an interesting choice—I'm curious to see how that works in contrast with the more traditional illustrations. Thanks for the recommendation!
