Review of My Spouse, My Friend
My Spouse, My Friend by Ingiete Oyama is an intriguing exploration of the institution of marriage, offering a deep dive into what marriage truly is according to God's plan.
The book examines God's original vision for marriage, focusing on the concept of companionship and friendship that He intended when creating Eve for Adam. With strong biblical backing, the author vividly describes the various aspects of marriage, shedding light on topics that are often overlooked but crucial for a successful union.
One of the central themes is the "exit mentality" that some spouses bring into marriage—where divorce becomes the go-to solution for any disagreement or challenge. The book serves as an eye-opener, reminding readers that marriage is not just about romantic feelings but also about hard work, determination, and commitment to making the relationship last a lifetime.
The author also delves into important considerations before marriage, often ignored in the euphoria of love, such as compatibility and shared values. Additionally, the impact of divorce, adultery, submission, finances, balance, friendship, transparency, companionship, relationships with in-laws, and more are explained in detail, each supported by specific Bible verses. This approach underscores that the insights provided are rooted in Scripture, offering a strong foundation for the discussion.
I particularly appreciated how each chapter concludes with a Bible verse that resonates with the topic discussed, making it a reflective and spiritually enriching read. The author's personal experiences, and those of her friends, are woven into the narrative, offering practical examples of marital issues and their solutions.
The book also features reflective statements or "Calls to Action" encouraging readers to pause and assess their relationships. Despite a few minor grammatical and spelling errors, they do not detract from the overall message or flow of the book.
I would rate this book a deserving 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it to married couples, those preparing for marriage, individuals in courtship, and anyone looking forward to settling down one day. Given the alarming rate of divorce today, this book is a must-read. While Christians may relate more closely to its biblical content, it offers valuable insights for readers of all backgrounds.
