"Beyond the Building" by Rob Finlay is a must-read for anyone in commercial real estate, whether you are just starting or have been in the business for a long time. Finlay grew up in a family that was all about real estate; he spent most of his teenage years cleaning, putting up signs, and sometimes working as a site superintendent, and in this book, he uses those experiences to help readers build strong and successful real estate businesses. This book is about using new technology and data to stay ahead in a market that is getting tougher every day.

One of the main ideas in the book is that simply managing properties is not enough anymore. Finlay explains that to succeed, you need to operate your business in a way that is driven by technology and data. He made it clear that understanding what your customers want, building a strong team, and spotting opportunities that others might miss are the keys to growing your business. The book is set up in a way that is easy to follow—with clear steps and real-life examples to show how these ideas can work in your own business.

What I liked most about this book was how practical it was. Finlay didn't just talk about ideas—he gave useful advice that you can use, no matter what stage your business is in. His points about why old-school methods no longer work and why embracing new technologies is important stood out to me. The real-life examples, like the stories of Max Bresner and Willy Walker, the CEO of Walker & Dunlop, were great because they showed how the advice can be applied in real situations. The section on how to make your business stand out in a crowded market was beneficial; I learned clear tips on how to be different from the competition.

There was absolutely nothing I disliked about this book, and for that reason, I’m giving "Beyond the Building" 5 out of 5 stars. It’s well-written, carefully edited, and packed with practical advice that anyone in commercial real estate can use. If you’re serious about growing your real estate business and staying ahead of the competition, this book is worth reading.
