Review of Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream
Dr. Frank L. Douglas's Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream focuses on his childhood. Dr. Frank L. Douglas’ story of adversity, racism, and defiance of societal norms saw a poor boy from Guyana rise and conquer the pharmaceutical business. The tale of how he rose from the very bottom to change the face of modern medical science through his proteges is indeed inspiring. Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream will certainly be in my favorite 5 out of 5-star book collection.
Frank L. Douglas is a very intriguing character, and his tenacity and spirit will leave the readers strongly moved. His performance is full of memorable victories and failures that let readers feel his emotions. These include Douglas‘s family members, his mentors, and his colleagues who form part of the development of the plot. They relate their experiences to Douglas so one sees the character's growth and gets an insight into the culture he grew up in. The author would like the reader to think the way he did during the tough times and take up the mantra of continuing to dream again. That’s why the book’s narrative is rather inspiring and interesting—for all of those who are interested in the topic of self-development, determination, and strength of the spirit.
Despite relatively high levels of workmanship and the history’s ability to evoke interest, the narrative is too much in favor of Douglas’s professional performance. All the same, further analysis of his personal life and relation with people could have given more information concerning his character and the reason for his doings. For now, though, the memoir could have provided more specifics of Douglas’s childhood and growing years in Guyana. It would also enable the readers to have an insight into the cultural and social background that he had, which defines his view of the world. Perhaps more attention could be paid to the difficulties during his life in the USA as a man of color during the period of civil rights activism.
It is quite remarkable that the editing of the book seems to be rather good on average. However, there are a few instances where the pacing of the remainder seems could have been made slightly better, especially within the final chapters. There are some areas where the descriptive chapters could have been made even better, but still, the book is a documentary that must be read by everybody interested in stories of success or achievements, the stories that demonstrate the power of the spirit.
