Review of Quest: Finding Freddie
Turn to the first page and meet Frederick (Freddie) and Ruth Nachman, who live in New York City. Freddie and Ruth own a business, which sometimes requires international travel. Look to the title for the first hint of mystery in this gripping adventure. Author Thomas Richard Spradlin narrates his secret mission in Quest: Finding Freddie. This exciting tale of bravery and human endurance features the author as a savvy operative in some thrilling undercover intrigue.
Spradlin's first chapter begins by chronicling the events taking place in the general area of Freddie’s disappearance to remind readers of the political atmosphere abroad. From a murderous coup d’etat to a hostage takeover at Entebbe Airport, countries in Africa have already experienced violence and military takeovers. The new leaders assassinate perceived enemies and confine lawbreakers in harsh conditions. Freddie takes a walk in this environment one day, but he doesn't return.
When Freddie cannot be contacted, his wife panics and offers Spradlin's law firm a large sum of money to rescue her husband. Spradlin flies to Nigeria to find Freddie. What steps must he take to navigate the intricacies of a militant government that is riddled with conspiracies within its ranks? What is the scope of his bargaining ability? How can he prove his personal strength among the most powerful leaders? Is Freddie still alive? Get your hands on this suspenseful and exotic story as soon as you can.
I found Spradlin's narrative style to be rather dull and tedious as he recounted the history of 1976 in relation to his story. However, I am happy to say that I was wrong, because once the chaos erupted, there was no turning back. I couldn't put the book down. Dialogue is something Spradlin uses effortlessly, and it is often witty. The dialogue breaks up narrative blocks and propels the story line at the proper time. I appreciate how Spradlin’s inner thoughts are highlighted in italics. This is another excellent device that the author uses to move the story line forward.
Upon getting past my initial hiccup, I was thoroughly impressed. While there were a few minor editorial errors, they were barely noticeable. These small oversights don't require any reduction in rating. Overall, the book appears to have been edited professionally, and it is well-written and engaging. For all these reasons, I rate Spradlin’s book 5 out of 5 stars.
The gritty, mature themes in the book include gun violence, murder, profanity, and sexual innuendos. I recommend Quest: Finding Freddie to adults and mature teens who enjoy reading thrillers and mysteries.
