Let's face it, life can be brutal and unpredictable, leaving us feeling helpless and uncertain about our next move. In those darkest moments, many of us turn to prayer, seeking comfort and guidance from a higher power. First Survivor by Mark Unger, is a heartbreaking and inspiring story of his family's journey to support their son Louis through his struggles and how they found the strength to overcome them together.

Imagine noticing something's off about your child and then finding out they have a serious illness. That's what happened to Mary Ellen and her son Louis in 2001. They thought they were dealing with one condition, but then new symptoms emerged, and the possibility of leukaemia was devastating. The Unger family's journey was heartbreaking, but also inspiring. Louis showed incredible strength as he underwent treatment, but it was clear that it was taking a toll on him. His family struggled to balance his needs with those of his brother Harry, who was feeling the strain of his brother's illness. In the end, they made a tough decision to try an experimental treatment at Sloan Kettering, and it paid off. Louis became one of the first patients to survive a previously incurable brain relapse. His narrative serves as a testament to the potency of fortitude and perseverance.

I absolutely adored this book! The glossary was a total lifesaver—it helped me navigate complex terms without getting bogged down or losing my flow. The author's writing is incredibly clear and concise, making it easy to become fully immersed in the story. What really blew me away was how skillfully the author captured the characters' emotions and vulnerabilities. Honestly, I'm having a hard time thinking of anything critical to say about this book. It's truly exceptional and has earned a permanent spot on my favourites list!

I give First Survivor a well-deserved rating of 5 out of 5 stars; it was well-edited, error-free, and I have no dislike for the book. Louis's story is an absolute inspiration! It shows that even in the toughest times, there's always hope. His courage and resilience are a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome anything. It doesn't matter how old you are; this story will touch your heart and remind you that we're all stronger than we think.
