Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is a very interesting memoir about the author's life. The book covers his journey in different aspects of human endeavours such as family, politics, and academics. The author, being an Algerian by birth, shared a lot about his Algerian heritage, such as the country's culture, annexation by France, and the fight for independence. The author's discussions on the impact of the French annexation of Algeria were quite disturbing and touching to me. An example is the effort of the French colonisers towards making sure that Algerian children assimilate the French culture, thereby denying them the knowledge of their heritage.
Further in the book, the author discussed how the Algerian revolution and fight for independence started, those who spearheaded it, and the sacrifices made by these heroes. Another aspect of the author's narration that readers will find interesting is the discussion on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It was in the narration that I learnt for the first time that an African country's president contributed immensely to the resolution of the conflict.
Even though this book is quite a long read, I enjoyed reading every page of it. The first thing I like is the author's explanation of the Algerian culture and lifestyle. One such is his description of a dress worn by women known as Gandouras. His praise for his mother's care and attention to him is also a virtue I appreciate. This will promote the importance of parents caring for their children. An example is how the author's mother wakes him up at 5 a.m. daily. Lastly, I like the numerous collections of colourful pictures used in the book. One such picture that I found memorable is that of the handshake between Yasser Arafat of Palestine and Rabin of Israel.
I rate this book five out of five stars because of the things I stated that I like about the book above. Justifying my rating of the book further is how well-detailed the author presented his discussion in such a way that I felt like I was with him throughout his sojourn. Lastly, I am moved to rate the book highly because of the acts of bravery displayed by the author during his participation in the fight for Algerian independence.
In terms of negatives, I did not notice any throughout my reading experience. The book was exceptionally edited and presented with eye-friendly text fonts. I will recommend this book to lovers of historical records on the fight for an end to slavery in different parts of the world. Peace advocates will also find this book to be a valuable collection in their library.
