What would you do if your child was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer? How far would you go to save them? In First Survivor: The Impossible Childhood Cancer Breakthrough, Mark Unger tells the powerful story of his son Louis’s battle with neuroblastoma, a devastating childhood cancer that changed their family’s life forever.

From the moment Louis began walking strangely, his parents, Mark and Mary Ellen, were thrown into a whirlwind of medical appointments and emotional distress. After numerous tests, they were given the heartbreaking diagnosis of neuroblastoma. But instead of giving up, they embarked on a relentless journey to find a way to save their son. The Ungers traveled between hospitals, worked with top doctors, and kept detailed notes of every treatment, medication, and procedure. Louis’s story is not just about survival—it’s about the resilience of a family, breakthroughs in medicine, and the power of never giving up hope.

What made this book particularly special was the personal touches. Having lost a parent to cancer, I could relate to what Louis's parents felt. The photographs of Louis throughout his journey, from his diagnosis to his incredible progress, truly bring the story to life. You can feel the love and strength of his family on every page. Mark and Mary Ellen’s dedication to finding a cure is heartbreaking and inspiring.

There was absolutely nothing I disliked about this book. It is well-written and professionally edited, with only a few minor errors that don’t take away from the emotional depth of the story. The clarity with which Mark explains complex medical procedures and treatments makes it accessible to any reader.

I give First Survivor 5 out of 5 stars for its emotional storytelling, the family’s incredible determination, and the hope it offers to others facing similar battles. I highly recommend it to anyone going through cancer or any life-threatening illness. This book is a testament to the strength of family, love, and medical breakthroughs.
